# How to Help an Adult Child With Addiction

When your adult son or daughter is struggling, knowing how to help without enabling or overstepping is one of the hardest challenges a parent can face.

I'm looking for: [Help for Myself](/help-for-myself)[Help for a Parent](/help-for-a-parent)[Help for a Son or Daughter](/help-for-a-son-or-daughter)[Help for a Friend](/help-for-a-friend)

Your child is an adult, but that doesn't make it any easier to watch them struggle. Recovery support provides accountability and encouragement that works alongside your relationship — not against it.

The Challenge

## Understanding the Parent-Adult Child Dynamic

Helping an adult child with addiction is uniquely difficult because of the tension between wanting to protect them and respecting their autonomy.

You may feel guilty, wondering if something in their upbringing contributed to the problem. You may feel frustrated that your advice isn't being taken. Or you may feel helpless — watching from the sidelines as they struggle.

These feelings are normal and shared by millions of parents. Understanding that addiction is a health challenge — not a failure of parenting — is an important first step.

## Setting Healthy Boundaries

Supporting your adult child doesn't mean enabling their behavior. Healthy boundaries might include:

- Not providing money that may be used for substances
- Being honest about how their behavior affects you
- Refusing to cover up or make excuses for them
- Making support conditional on their willingness to engage with recovery resources

Boundaries are an act of love, not punishment. They create structure that can encourage positive change.

Guidance

## How to Approach the Conversation

Choose a time when you're both calm. Lead with love and specific observations rather than accusations or labels.

Present recovery support as an option — not an ultimatum. Let them know that peer coaching is private, virtual, and flexible, and that it provides support from someone outside the family who understands recovery.

Be prepared for resistance. If they're not ready, let them know the door is open and that you'll be there when they are.
